How many times a day do you hear, see, read about how wonderful ‘Love’ is and that we should all ‘have someone to love’, ‘be in love’, have a sex on a regular basis… yada, yada, yada…
Everywhere you look, love is being touted as the ULTIMATE goal of your human existence.
And hey, while you are in love… why not have a lot of sex too?
Personally, these are ideas i REALLY like!
And then along comes the next step in the progression: a RELATIONSHIP! Hey, that’s the way things go sometimes though…
Now we all know that relationships can be astoundingly great! I think we can also agree that, yeah… there are some which will inspire you to… harboring some VERY negative emotions.
But today, i am feeling like a good rant is in order about the double-standard of the ‘pairing’, ‘partnering’, ‘mate’, relationship.
Note: homophobes, Christians who ascribe to the ‘Anyone not like us’ mentality… you can all get your matches out now ‘cuz i am probably going to pi** you off.
First!
What is it that we are ALL looking for in our lives?
LOVE! Someone to love, and who will love us back with equal measure. And no, i am NOT talking about adopting a puppy. I am talking about finding that person who will allow you to love them and will return that love.
Now, yeah, there is a good portion of the population who find that love and companionship with someone of the opposite sex.
Good on them, and yeah, i will confess to being one of them.
Does that make me and the rest of the heterosexual population any better than those who don’t have this as their lifestyle?
NOT IN THE LEAST!!!
There are PEOPLE (individuals, human beings, men, women, and yes teenagers, male and female) who find that this is not right for them. And no, i am NOT going into the argument of choice versus human biology.
What i am saying is that this is THEIR lifestyle! If you don’t want to play in that sandbox, take your shovel and pail and go play somewhere else!
These people have the right to the pursuit of their OWN happiness, not your version of their happiness! It’s in the second paragraph of The Declaration of Independence!
O-kay… all that said, let’s get to the crux of my rant: Mississippi’s Itawamba County school district has this policy that requires senior prom dates be of the opposite sex.
This is 2010 folks!
18-year-old high school Senior Constance McMillen would really like to go to prom with her girlfriend, that’s all.
It is probably NOT news to her classmates that she is a lesbian and has a girlfriend. So far, i have not read ANYTHING where these kids are upset at that, they seem to be more upset that they are not going to have a PROM!
Without going into bad ‘Mississippi’ jokes and how behind the time these people are, no, they are NOT the only ones who have shown their COLOSSAL ignorance (bordering on stupidity) in this matter. Tharptown High School in Russellville, Alabama showed their homophobic bent when they had a request from one of ‘those lesbians’ who wanted to take her girlfriend to the prom. But then, Alabama harbors the same bunch who had actually banned a wine from being sold in-state because the drawing on the label shows a nude woman. Ya can’t make this kind of material up folks…
Is this a grand exhibition of hypocrisy or what? It’s not like the school administrators don’t know that there are Gay and Lesbian students being taught within their classrooms. I wonder if they would be willing to turn away the dollars they get for teaching those very students because they are not straight? hmmm…
And yeah… sadly, there are a lot of other instances where people of today show their hypocrisy, ignorance, bigotry, and down-right stupidity in a multitude of ways.
Well… read the story for yourself and tell me that my initial reaction is that they didn’t like it when she came home to find her wife being arrested. Now, it might just be me… but… i am kinda thinking that their outing her was a little payback for her alleged attitude.
i am not bashing the cops here, anyone who knows me knows that i am a VERY hardcore supporter of the police and the military people who ‘man that wall’. But, beneath that uniform are people. People who… might find themselves over-zealously enforcing the law. Good way to put that isn’t it…?
Whatever the reason… they have now screwed up the life and career of someone who was devoted to protecting them. Just because she isn’t what they think is right… just because she is in a relationship with a woman.
How much might this country suffer because of their actions? How much will SHE suffer because they took that extra step? Yeah, the law is the law, but you know…
Back to Constance though: reading through various comments on the reports and blogs on this, i have found that people are either on her side (about 98%), or the ‘this world is going to burn because of her and people like her’ (2%).
The social-media sites all have groups in support of her and all with very sizable memberships. The Facebook group “Let Constance Take Her Girlfriend to Prom!” currently has 261,631 fans who reject the idiocy displayed by the entire mentality of people still caught up in the 1950’s.
And yes, i am one of those fans.
My parting shot on this one is simple: LET people love who they want to. If they are lucky enough to find that one true love in their life, be happy for them. I hope that you have been so lucky, i know i am. But, don’t try to ruin their lives because you haven’t found it or are so caught up in a dogma that doesn’t allow for people to be and live they way THEY feel is right for them.
